The Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MFA) is now advising against non-essential travel to Bangladesh.

Demonstrations have taken place in several cities, including the capital Dhaka, during the week, according to the Swedish Embassy in Bangladesh.

"Reports have been received of fatalities and a large number of injured. Traffic connections are also severely affected and internet connections in the country are limited. The mobile network is functioning but is periodically overloaded", the embassy writes on its website.

The government of Bangladesh has also issued a curfew for parts of the country.

The advisory is in effect until further notice.
