The reason why the Italian parliament discussed men's violence against women on Tuesday was that a new foundation was presented. It is named after 22-year-old Giulia Cecchettin, who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in November last year.
The increase in the number of cases of sexual violence is linked to a type of exclusion and deviance that is somehow related to illegal immigration, said Valditara, who belongs to the nationalist Lega, before the parliament.
He received strong criticism from other politicians and from Giulia Cecchettin's sister, who was present along with several other family members of the murdered 22-year-old.
If people listened – instead of spreading propaganda during the presentation of a foundation named after a young woman who was killed by a young, white, seemingly perfect Italian – there would not be a hundred women murders in Italy every year, she said.
So far this year, 83 women have been murdered by men in Italy, according to the country's interior ministry. In 2023, 96 women were murdered, and in 2022, 106. According to Italy's statistical central bureau, 94 percent of the murders of women in 2022 were committed by Italian men.
