A Swedish man who was sentenced to death in Iraq for drug offenses has had his sentence converted to imprisonment, according to reports to Swedish media.
The reports on the length of his prison sentence vary.
According to TV4 News, which was the first to report on the event, the man is sentenced to eleven years in prison.
SVT News, which has accessed digital court documents showing that the death sentence has been lifted, reports that the man is sentenced to 15 years in prison.
His father confirms the reports that the death sentence has been converted.
We would like to thank the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the embassy for their work on our son's case, says the father to SVT.
The convicted man is in his 35s and has dual citizenship.
TT has contacted the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, which cannot confirm the reports.
Three other Swedes have been sentenced to death in Iraq for being involved in a fatal shooting.
