Two people have died in a rescue operation in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Sicily. Several people ended up in the water when the Coast Guard's vessel approached the distressed boat.

It was late on Saturday evening when the Italian coast guard received an alarm about a boat in distress. When the rescue vessel approached the distressed boat, several people ended up in the water.

34 people – who are said to come from Syria, Egypt, and Bangladesh – were rescued from the sea. But two of them died shortly after the rescue operation, reports AFP.

The coast guard has launched an investigation into how the accident occurred.

Nearly 400 people have died in the Mediterranean between January and April, according to the International Organization for Migration, IOM.
