At least 229 people have died in a landslide that occurred in southern Ethiopia on Monday, according to local authorities. Among the victims are small children and pregnant women.
The landslide occurred after heavy rainfall in the mountainous region in a remote part of the country.
Images show people using their bare hands to dig through the earth masses to search for survivors. Many of the victims were buried when rescue workers searched through the steep terrain for survivors from an earlier landslide that occurred over the weekend.
Southern Ethiopia has been hit by flooding after a heavy seasonal rain in the spring. Thousands of residents have been forced to move and the rainfall has caused significant damage to infrastructure and crops.
