A man who was fishing at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia has died in a shark attack.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon off the coast of Humpy Island, located off the country's northeast coast.
"The man was fishing with his family when he was bitten by a shark," says the police in the state of Queensland.
He suffered life-threatening injuries and died about an hour and a half later. According to a spokesperson for the ambulance in Queensland, the man had been bitten in the neck. The police have not been able to specify what type of fishing the man was doing when he was injured, whether it was with a harpoon or similar.
The last fatal shark attack in Australia occurred in December 2023, when a 15-year-old boy was killed while surfing in southern Australia.
