France's President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer want to propose a limited ceasefire in Ukraine for a month. The ceasefire would apply "in the air and at sea", says Macron in an interview with Le Figaro on Sunday, in connection with the top meeting with several European leaders.

In addition, power lines and power plants are to be included in the proposal for the limited ceasefire.

Not on land

However, it would not be relevant to include land battles in a limited, month-long ceasefire, as the Russian invasion front is far too extensive, according to Macron. This would make it impossible to control that the agreement is complied with.

Peacekeeping European forces on site are also not relevant in the near future, if the agreement on a ceasefire is adopted.

There will be no European forces on Ukrainian soil in the coming weeks, says Macron.

Few heads of state and government officials commented on the details of the talks on Sunday, and Macron's statement was not made on site in London.

"Aware of everything"

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky was asked about a limited ceasefire by reporters in London late on Sunday, where he was one of the main figures during the top meeting, if he knew about the proposal for a ceasefire.

I am aware of everything, replied Zelensky to the British BBC.

Germany's outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz told reporters directly after the meeting that a break from Russian bombing and air attacks could mean the beginning of real peace talks.

All present leaders also agreed that countries' defense budgets must increase.

Macron proposes in the interview with Le Monde that European countries should increase their defense budgets to between 3 and 3.5 percent.
