The fighter jet had just taken off when it was hit by a technical fault, according to the Bangladeshi military. The plane caught fire and crashed straight into the primary school Milestone School and College. At least 25 children lost their lives and over 170 were injured.
On Tuesday, grieving parents and teachers gathered in front of the burnt-out school building. Many were still in shock over what had happened.
Farhan Hasan, who had just written a test, was on his way out of the building when the plane crashed.
My best friend, who I was in the classroom with, died right in front of my eyes, he says to the BBC's correspondent on the spot in Dhaka.
Teachers saved many children
The 42-year-old teacher Maherin Chowdhury had gone out into the schoolyard when the burning plane flew into the school building. She immediately ran back in and managed to save nearly 20 children before she herself was burned so badly that she had to be taken to hospital. Chowdhury's life could not be saved.
Even though she herself was burned, she tried to save the children, her husband said to Jagonews.
Milestone has several thousand students and is located in a densely populated part of the metropolis Dhaka. The pilot Mohammed Toukir Islam, who himself died in the accident, was out on a training flight. According to the military, he "did everything to redirect the plane from densely populated areas to a more sparsely populated place". The military is investigating the cause of the accident, but already critical voices are being raised about the army training over such densely populated areas.
Severe burns
During the night, relatives have gathered outside the city's hospitals where the injured have been taken. According to the authorities, about 70 people are still being treated, most of them for severe burns.
Mohammed Abdur Rahim was looking for his cousin.
We can't find my cousin, she's missing. The doctors said we should look at other hospitals.
Most of the victims in the hospitals are minors, between 9 and 14 years old.
The authorities have declared a day of mourning on Tuesday.
