Now Meta, which owns among other things Facebook and Instagram, has started rolling out its new payment model. It is based on the fact that users in the EU must choose to either pay for an ad-free experience or be tracked by the apps.

Swedish Facebook and Instagram users are now starting to be met with the information when they open their social media apps and need to make a choice.

Meta gives its users the option to either pay a monthly fee to avoid ads or to continue using the apps for free – and continue to be tracked.

Under the new payment option, the text "Your data is not processed for ads" is stated.

If you choose to continue with the free option, it says instead "Your information is processed and you will see ads where you can find new products and brands".

On Thursday, Breakit reported that the new model had started rolling out and that the price was then 75 kronor.

The background to all this is that the EU has legislated that companies must obtain users' consent to track their activity.
