The meeting in Stockholm was announced by Scott Bessent in an interview on the TV channel Fox Business.
I will be in Stockholm on Monday and Tuesday with my Chinese counterparts and we will work on what is likely to become an extension, he says about the agreement on a temporary ceasefire in the trade war that expires on August 12.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) confirms the meeting on X.
"It's good that the two countries want to meet in Sweden to seek consensus", he writes and continues:
"The talks primarily concern the relationship between the USA and China, but also have great significance for global trade and the economy. To safeguard the rule-based world trade and Sweden's economic interests in a complicated world is one of the government's top priorities."
Also regarding China's purchase of Russian oil
Scott Bessent's statement on Fox Business comes after he said that the next round of talks between the world's two largest economies may include the issue of China buying oil from Russia and Iran.
That other issues than China's large surplus in trade with the USA and the issue of trade barriers for rare earth metals will now be addressed is confirmed in the Fox Business interview.
He also claims that President Donald Trump's tariffs make companies move jobs back in the manufacturing industry to the USA. The tariffs also bring in large sums of money to the US treasury, according to Bessent, who refers to a calculation that shows it can be tariff revenues of 2,800 billion dollars over ten years.
"Pretty hard" deadline
Bessent adds in the interview that the deadline announced by Donald Trump on August 1 is "pretty hard" for all countries. But it will be possible to negotiate trade terms with the USA even if the tariffs are raised, according to the finance minister.
And according to Bessent, trade talks with Japan are "going very well".
I wouldn't be surprised if we can get a deal with Japan quickly, he says.
