Kristersson: Crimes are largely about immigration

The ongoing wave of violence in Sweden is largely about immigration, says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (The Moderate Party) to Nyhetsmorgon on TV4.

Kristersson thinks that immigration must remain strict to tackle the wave of violence.

If new people who commit new crimes keep coming in, then we have no chance of dealing with this, says the Prime Minister to TV4 when commenting on the wave of violence.

We have a globalized crime that also has a lot to do with immigration. We have had very high immigration to Sweden for a very long time, now we have tightened it up significantly, it must remain very strict.

Around 600 gang criminals are staying abroad, and many of them are in Turkey. According to Kristersson, Sweden has good cooperation with Turkey today, although far from perfect. Kristersson describes a "beginning cooperation" with the country that sometimes leads to extraditions.

On average, one explosion has occurred per day in January. On Thursday, the government held an extra meeting with the council against organized crime.

That we do not have control over the wave of violence is quite obvious, said Kristersson at a press conference after the meeting.

A law that allows the police to use secret coercive measures, such as wiretapping, against children under 15 years old is to be expedited. It was intended to come into effect on July 1, 2026, but the goal is now October 1, 2025.
