Kenya hopes that a promised force with military and police will be in place in Haiti in January. This was stated by Kenya's President William Ruto in the UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday.

Kenya has previously promised to send police and military to Haiti to gain control over the criminal groups that control parts of the country and have great dominance in the capital Port-au-Prince.

So far, insufficient forces have arrived in crisis- and misery-stricken Haiti, which has rapidly worsened the situation according to international observers.

Kenya will have placed an additional contingent to reach the goal of 2,500 police by January 2025, said Ruto.

He stated that the delay is due to lack of resources, logistical problems, and inadequate equipment.

Haiti's transitional leader Edgard Leblanc Fils seemed not to be satisfied with the message. In his speech to the General Assembly, he appealed for the UN to consider "changing the security operation to a peacekeeping operation with a UN mandate".
