Iran's highest court has overturned the death sentence of Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi.
"Salehi's death sentence has been revoked," writes the artist's advocate on X and adds that the highest court has ordered a new trial in the case.
Salehi was arrested in autumn 2022 in connection with the widespread protests that broke out after a young woman died in the notorious morality police's custody. She had been taken there because she was not deemed to have worn her hijab correctly. Salehi's political lyrics became a thorn in the regime's side.
Salehi was accused, among other things, of "spreading corruption in the world" and state-controlled media pointed him out as a key figure in the nationwide protests.
