Ikea in Finland stands firm on criticized decision

Ikea in Finland removes Swedish product information in its stores – and does not back down from the decision despite harsh criticism from Swedish-speaking customers, reports the Finland-Swedish newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet (HBL).

According to the newspaper, Swedish information has existed in parallel with the Finnish signs since the Swedish furniture giant established itself in Finland. In other countries with multiple national languages, the information is available in all national languages.

Camilla Weurlander, marketing area manager for Ikea in Espoo, says that language decisions are made in each country. In response to criticism about poorer Swedish service, she explains that Ikea is renewing all product information in Swedish by transitioning to a digital format.

This change is part of a larger transformation where Ikea strives to better meet customers' changing needs and purchasing behavior, says Weurlander to HBL and claims that it was not the company's intention to treat Swedish-speaking customers worse.

She admits, however, that Ikea made a mistake by removing the Swedish signs before the digital tools were put into use and apologizes.
