First place goes to the American video artist Arthur Jafa's breakthrough work "Love is the message – The message is death", which deals with the experiences of blacks in the USA.
Artnews places Britta Marakatt-Labba's embroidery at 35th place. It was with "Historjá" that she had her major breakthrough at Documenta in Kassel, Germany in 2017 – when the Swedish art scene also discovered her. Marakatt-Labba has embroidered a story about Sami mythology and history, including the uprising in northern Norwegian Kautokeino in 1852, after which two Sami people were beheaded.
The artwork is currently on display in the exhibition "In the Footsteps of the Stars" at the Kin Museum in Kiruna – an exhibition that will open in revised form at the Modern Museum in Stockholm on May 17.
