Christoph Heusgen in tears at the security conference

The Munich Security Conference implied a kind of "European nightmare", according to its outgoing chairman Christoph Heusgen – who broke down during the closing speech.

When he summarized the security conference in Germany, diplomat Heusgen brought up US Vice President JD Vance's tough speech to Europe, and stated that there was reason to fear that "our common values are no longer so common", according to Spiegel.

Christoph Heusgen also expressed gratitude to the European politicians who stood up for values and principles that they defend.

No one did this better than President Zelenskyj, said Heusgen, who towards the end of the speech drew his hand over his face and said with a lump in his throat:

Let me finish, and it's difficult.

Heusgen took over the leadership of the security conference in 2022, after having been, among other things, Germany's UN ambassador and security and foreign policy advisor to Chancellor Angela Merkel. The war in Ukraine broke out shortly after his first conference in February 2022.

He is now succeeded by Jens Stoltenberg, former Secretary-General of Nato.
