The 70-year-old former president who ruled Brazil between 2019 and 2022 is accused by prosecutors of having attempted to stage a coup after he lost the presidential election in 2022 to Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro denies the allegations.
Bolsonaro has been imposed with several restrictions during the legal process, including an ankle monitor and a ban on using social media.
According to Judge Alexandre de Moraes, Bolsonaro has violated the ban by publishing content on his three sons' social media.
The far-right former president is accused of "incitement and instigation of attacks on the Supreme Court and obvious support for foreign intervention in the Brazilian judiciary", writes de Moraes in his decision.
US President Donald Trump has called the trial a "witch hunt" and imposed punitive tariffs of up to 50 percent on many Brazilian products, including the motivation that the Brazilian government has exercised politically motivated persecution against Bolsonaro. The US Department of Justice has also imposed sanctions directly against de Moraes.
