Doctors in India went on a nationwide strike on Saturday after a medical student was found murdered and raped at her workplace, R G Kar hospital, in Calcutta (Kolkata) last week.

Already on Monday, some hospitals began to strike, which has now escalated to the Indian Medical Association (IMA) issuing a one-day strike, as non-acute and non-essential care is stopped. IMA calls the murder barbaric and demands better protection for healthcare personnel against violence.

After the murder, widespread protests have broken out across the country. Large numbers of people have protested under the slogan "take back the night", but violent riots have also erupted.

A man who is said to have had some form of employment at the hospital has been arrested. The autopsy of the victim confirms sexual assault and the victim's parents have stated to the court that they suspect she was gang-raped.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemns men's violence against women and threatens perpetrators with hanging.
