The German government confirms that it has decided on a ban on components from the Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE in Germany's 5G network.
The decision applies from the end of 2026 and is motivated by national security reasons.
Companies have until the end of 2029 to replace the technology from the two telecom companies.
The German authorities' review of the country's 5G network has been ongoing for over a year and has been delayed due to different views on the issue among the three governing parties.
"Today's threat situation highlights the importance of a secure and resilient infrastructure for telecommunications, especially considering the risks of sabotage and espionage," says Interior Minister Nancy Faeser.
The EU Commission warned last summer that Huawei poses a risk to EU security. Sweden has blocked Huawei from participating in the expansion of the 5G network. In a larger number of other EU countries, including Germany, Huawei equipment is still being used.
