Prior to the 100-year anniversary of the Bauhaus school in Dessau, the far-right AFD is now stepping forward as a contemporary critic of the form and craft school that – despite the Nazis shutting it down – would have a decisive influence on 20th-century design and architecture.
In the region of Saxony-Anhalt, AFD has submitted a motion where they describe the upcoming anniversary as a glorification of the Bauhaus style, which according to AFD's Hans-Thomas Tillschneider has inspired "architectural sins" and "crushing ugliness".
The German Bauhaus movement united function and aesthetics, resulting in "degenerate art" according to the Nazis. After the Nazis shut down the school in 1933, more than half of the 1,200 students fled the country, while around 200 instead joined the Nazi party.
