Four people have been taken to hospital after being exposed to the toxic gas NMP at Northvolt's facility in Skellefteå, reports Dagens Arbete.
The incident occurred on Friday.
The information I have is that when we performed maintenance work on furnaces in downstream 2, three people were exposed to NMP, says press chief Matti Kataja to TT.
A fourth person is suspected to have been exposed.
All four were sent to hospital for control as a precautionary measure and all have been allowed to go home, says Matti Kataja.
NMP is an organic solvent that is highly toxic and has a very characteristic smell, according to Dagens Arbete. Inhalation poses a risk of burns, impaired consciousness, cramps, pulmonary edema, and unconsciousness.
We are now launching an investigation to determine what happened and will submit a report to the Work Environment Authority about the incident, says Kataja.
In recent years, several incidents have occurred at Northvolt. A previous review conducted by Dagens Nyheter shows that at least 26 serious accidents have occurred at Northvolt's facilities since 2019.
These are different types of events and each is investigated separately, says Kataja.
