SMHI Warns of Severe Thunderstorms in Northern and Central Sweden

SMHI has issued a yellow warning for severe thunderstorms in northern and central Sweden. On Thursday, the warning lies over Jämtland and Västernorrland, then there is a front that moves south during Friday, says Albin Torsson, duty meteorologist at SMHI.

The warning applies from 16:00 on Thursday until 01:00. The thunderstorm weather entails a risk of many lightning bolts and heavy rain that can cause flooding or fires. There is also a risk of large hail and very strong winds.

The warning affects parts of Jämtland County and northern Västernorrland, as well as large parts of Västerbotten County and the eastern parts of Norrbotten County.

”Already started”

However, there is great uncertainty about exactly where in these areas the thunderstorm will form, according to SMHI.

It has already started thundering a bit over Norway, I've seen. But the large area has not yet come in over Sweden. It's hard to say exactly where in this big pot it will be concentrated, says Albin Torsson on Thursday afternoon.

SMHI has also issued a yellow warning for Friday for severe thunderstorms in central Sweden.

Locally also hail

In southern Norrland, northwestern and eastern Svealand, as well as southern Gävleborg, there are warnings of strong gusts, locally up to storm strength and severe thunderstorms. The winds can fell trees and blow away loose objects.

It's a front that's moving south, mainly during the afternoon and evening tomorrow. There can be strong winds and locally also hail, and there's a risk of flooding when a lot of water can come in a short time, says Albin Torsson.

The weather system also means that yellow warnings have been issued for strong winds at sea on Friday. This applies to gale-force winds over the southern and northern Bothnian Sea, the northern Quark, and the Bay of Bothnia.
