Owners of foreign-registered cars owed Swedish municipalities almost 35 million kronor last year, reports P4 Sjuhärad.

The payment frequency for foreign-registered cars varies in the country. In Borås, every fifth parking fine is paid – on Gotland, every other one.

They have a solution where the vehicle driver receives information in the same language as the car comes from. They can log in and pay via their credit card, says Magnus Callin, business developer at the Transport Agency.

In Borås, you get a fine in Swedish – but the information can be read in several languages on the parking company's website, according to Jan-Åke Claesson, unit manager at the technical administration in Borås.

The Transport Agency can only send payment reminders within Sweden. But the statistics show that municipalities can get far with clear information, according to Callin.

It makes it easier to get the money for the municipality's part, he says.
