The takeover will take place on Friday, pending the ongoing government negotiations to reach a goal or result in a possible new election. The far-right party FPÖ has been tasked with leading the discussions, which for Schallenberg's party ÖVP will be led by the acting party leader Christian Stocker.
But it requires that we get honest answers, says Stocker according to the news agency APA and mentions media freedom, independence from Russia and European cooperation as key issues.
Schallenberg has previously acted as head of government during the autumn of 2021. Nehammer's resignation comes after unsuccessful government negotiations with the liberal Neos and the social democratic SPÖ.
