A parasitic flatworm discovered on Svalbard has been named after Abba. The name was a way for the researchers to pay tribute to the group 50 years after their Eurovision victory in Brighton, says the responsible researcher Chahinez Bouguerche at the Natural History Museum in a press release.
She also mentions that the scientific journal where the article was published is celebrating a century of research.
"This blend of celebration and scientific commitment is an example of how researchers can honor cultural icons and at the same time highlight the importance of their field", she says.
The new flatworm is called Derogenes abba in Latin and was discovered within the framework of a research project funded by the Swedish Art Project.
