The organization measures the representation of gender and ethnicity among actors and directors in the hundred most profitable films of 2024.
Out of a total of 112 directors, 13.4 percent were women, which is slightly more than the 12.1 percent of female directors in 2023, the report shows.
"Female directors are still significantly underrepresented and rarely get the opportunity to stand behind the camera," says a spokesperson for Annenberg in a statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Since 2007, the film companies Universal and Walt Disney Studios have released the most films with female directors, with seven and six films each, respectively.
Last year, a total of 24.1 percent of the directors came from an underrepresented ethnic group, which was slightly more than the 22.4 percent the previous year. The increase stands in sharp contrast to the 41.6 percent that the group makes up in the American population.
