In total, 5,336 cars were reported stolen in Sweden, which is a decrease of 13 percent compared to the previous year.
The proportion of cars that are not recovered is 32 percent. The high figure indicates that Sweden is still an attractive country for international theft gangs – and that many vehicles are likely taken abroad.
"Many believe that stolen cars are only resold within the criminal world, but that's not the case. The vehicles are re-identified with great skill and often sold to completely ordinary people with no connection to crime," says Niclas Antonsson at Larmtjänst in a press release.
The most stolen car brand last year was Volvo with 895 missing cars. Next came Volkswagen with 539 cars and BMW with 447 cars. The most reports of stolen cars were made in the Stockholm police region and the South region.
