Negotiations have been ongoing for three years and have sometimes been very tough.
Respect for important principles related to Norwegian fisheries management and sovereignty is fundamental in our relationship with the EU, says Norway's Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide (Ap) who confirmed an agreement on Monday.
The EU countries will receive a quota of 2.8 percent, and are thus back at the same level as before Brexit. For 2025, the quota will therefore be 9,217 tons.
In return, the EU commits to ensuring that cod catches at Svalbard and Smutthullet remain within the set quotas.
The issue of fishing at Svalbard was complicated when the United Kingdom left the EU. In the agreement, the UK secured the right to fish in fish-rich areas off Svalbard's coast – which meant a significant reduction in the EU's share.
Norway claims that the agreement with the EU does not affect how much cod Norwegian fishermen are allowed to catch.
