The rapper and singer Doja Cat claimed that her account on X had been hacked – after it was used to promote a new cryptocurrency with her name, according to Los Angeles Times.
The cryptocurrency named after the artist Doja Cat skyrocketed on Monday. This after the world star's account on X urged its 5.6 million followers to buy it.
"Buy $DOJA or else", it said in one of several (now deleted) posts on X, illustrated by a picture of Doja Cat together with a sword.
But according to Doja Cat's Instagram, her X account had been hacked. The cryptocurrency's value plummeted an hour and a half after the alleged hacking attack, and a so-called "Doja coin" was only worth fractions of an öre on Tuesday afternoon.
The cryptocurrency "Doja coin" is a so-called "meme coin", which lacks actual value, beyond the attention users give it in the moment. Some "meme coins" become valuable, like the noted "Doge coin", while hundreds of others (often marketed by celebrities) often plummet in value shortly after launch.
For potential hackers, the goal is to engage many internet users, drive up the price, and then sell their shares before the value drops.
