Over 30 people have been killed in a riot at a prison in Mozambique's capital Maputo. In connection with the riot and unrest, over 1,500 prisoners managed to escape, according to the country's Justice Department.
Police Chief Bernardino Rafael stated late on Wednesday that 150 of the prisoners from the high-security prison had been apprehended, local media reports.
The prison riot worsened an already poor security situation in the Maputo region, where political unrest has claimed 20 lives just this week and hundreds in recent times. The unrest broke out since the country's highest court ruled that Frelimo Party's presidential candidate Daniel Chapo was declared the winner of the election.
