The parents have not been able to meet or talk to their adult daughter for several years.
"It's an immense sorrow and powerlessness that we feel", says the mother in a press release from the Centre for Justice, which represents the parents.
It was in October that SVT's Mission: Investigation revealed that the daughter had been kept at a secret location by her guardian for several years. The guardian applied for protected registration and it was granted by the Tax Authority – without the parents understanding why. Thereafter, the guardian was able to move the daughter to a secret location and cut off all contact between her and the family.
The daughter has several disabilities and has throughout her life been dependent on her parents' support. In 2021, she got a new guardian, who is the one who has cut off all contact.
"The parents have the right to an independent judicial review of the decision that split their family", says Lisa Greene, lawyer at the Centre for Justice and representative for the parents, in the press release.
According to Swedish law, the parents do not have the right to appeal the Tax Authority's decision and have it overturned in a national court. Now the parents' hope lies in an appeal with the support of the European Convention on Human Rights, which, among other things, protects the right to respect for family life.
