Back problems too severe – star misses European Championship

Back pains are too strong – and the time until the European Championship premiere is all too short. Therefore, national team star Daniela de Jong will miss the final round. "I'm very sad right now, but it will get better with time", she says.

The Women's Handball European Championship begins for Sweden against North Macedonia on Thursday evening.

In the last minute, midfielder de Jong had hoped that her back problems would subside. Therefore, she opted out of the national team matches against Poland over the weekend.

"It's tough right now and extra difficult since it was an injury that stopped me from the championship last year as well. I'm very sad right now, but it will get better with time", says de Jong in a press release.

Daniela de Jong made her championship debut in the World Championship in Spain three years ago and was also part of the Swedish team during the home World Championship last year before a hand injury put a stop to further play.

Calling in a replacement is not currently an option. The national team is traveling with 17 players to Debrecen early on Tuesday morning.

"It's a very sad message for Daniela, who is once again forced to leave the team in connection with a championship. It's also a hard blow for us as a team since we're losing a player in top form who has had a strong autumn. We're supporting 'Dani' and hope for a good rehabilitation and a quick return to the national team", says national team coach Tomas Axnér.
