The former Soviet states of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have exchanged territory – and thus put an end to a decade-long bloody dispute.
The countries in Central Asia have been arguing over border demarcation since the fall of the Soviet Union, with sporadically flared-up deadly clashes on both sides of the border. In September 2022, an escalation occurred with tanks and artillery, where tens or hundreds of people were killed.
According to the agreement, Kyrgyzstan will receive around 25 square kilometers of land from Tajikistan. In exchange, the neighboring country will receive an unknown area of land and improved access to shared water resources.
