The President of the USA, Joe Biden, condemns Russia's bloody attack on Ukrainian Poltava, where over 50 people lost their lives and hundreds were injured. Biden calls it "deplorable".
He says in a statement that the USA will continue to assist Kiev militarily, which includes "providing air defense systems and the capabilities needed for them to defend their country.
Tuesday's attack, where two Iskander rockets hit a military school building and a nearby healthcare facility, is one of the deadliest single events since Russia launched the full-scale war in Ukraine in February 2022.
Poltava has several hundred thousand inhabitants and is located about ten miles from the border with Russia, further inland than the more war-torn major city of Kharkiv.
For Swedish purposes, Poltava is known as the site of the largest battle during the Great Northern War, between Sweden and Russia in the summer of 1709.
