On Friday, this year's Bergman Week on Fårö came to an end. Then, Stockholm-based Kaly Halkawt became the first to receive the newly established script award, The Ingmar Bergman Script Award, for her feature film script "Donia's World".
"Donia's World is a contemporary story about conflicting identities – and about faith, doubt, and freedom," the jury's motivation reads.
The prize winner receives 50,000 kronor plus the opportunity to be coached by an established filmmaker.
"Ever since I saw 'Whispers and Cries' on a worn-out rental DVD in my teenage years, I have been fascinated by Bergman's existential curiosity, that as a filmmaker he was never afraid to ask difficult questions. I have absolutely been inspired by his artistic courage and religious doubt in writing 'Donia's World', even if there may be more humor than in 'Whispers and Cries'", says Kaly Halkawt in a press release.
The script competition is arranged by SF Studios and the Bergman Center Foundation.
