Seven years of negotiations have delayed the construction of a dam against the Klabava River southwest of Prague. Now the plans can be scrapped, as beavers in the Czech river have already taken care of it.
The rodents have built a dam that is much larger than what humans had planned to construct, and thereby not only built protection for endangered crayfish in the river but also saved taxpayers the equivalent of over ten million kronor.
The new dam also creates wetlands protected from polluted water.
After completing their work, the beaver family has moved to a stream, where they have built four more dams that protect the wetlands.
As a bonus, the construction has made the local farmers stop complaining about the beavers, which previously attacked the farmers' trees but now keep to the new dam.
We expect no new conflicts with the beaver within the next ten years, says Bohumil Fiser at the Czech Nature Conservation Agency.
