San Francisco Giants icon Willie Mays has died.
The baseball legend was 93 years old.
"He was an inspiration to an entire generation", writes Barack Obama on X.
Willie Mays passed away on Tuesday in San Francisco.
"My dad passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the love you've given him over the years", says his son Michael Mays according to a press release from San Francisco Giants.
Willie Mays belonged to the Giants for over 20 years and was named the league's most valuable player on two occasions.
In 2015, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from former US President Barack Obama.
"Willie Mays was not just an outstanding athlete. He was also a wonderfully warm and generous person – and an inspiration to an entire generation. I was lucky to have spent time with him over the years", writes Obama on X.
Mays will be honoured at Rickwood Field in Alabama, where his career began.
