The Italian football legend Roberto Baggio, 57, was robbed at his home on Thursday evening.

Now the former footballer is speaking out for the first time after the distressing incident.

First and foremost, I and my family would like to thank everyone for the love we have received. Really, thank you, says Baggio in a statement to ANSA.

The thieves broke in while Baggio was watching the Spain–Italy match with his family. The 57-year-old confronted the thieves and was then hit on the head with a pistol and locked in a room. He was later taken to hospital.

Under such circumstances, anything can happen, and fortunately, the violence I suffered only resulted in a few stitches, bruises, and a lot of fear. Now I must overcome the fear, continues Baggio.

The thieves are said to have made off with jewellery, watches, and money.
