After 52 years of delay under 39 different governments, it is clear that the new art museum Brera Moderna in Milan will be inaugurated on December 7. Brera Moderna is located just a stone's throw from the much older Pinacoteca di Brera – Brera Gallery – and will display a hundred contemporary art works that are part of the collections but have hardly been exhibited so far. The inauguration of the new Brera Moderna has been postponed and delayed due to a variety of reasons – most recently due to asbestos and problems with the air conditioning.
The upcoming inauguration coincides with the opening of a new opera season at La Scala in Milan.
The older Brera Gallery features paintings by, among others, Caravaggio and Raphael. Together, the two museums are expected to attract an audience of over 500,000 people per year.
