Albania's former leader Sali Berisha, who has been under house arrest for a year, has been released, announced an anti-corruption court in the country on Wednesday. The corruption investigation against him continues.
The 80-year-old Berisha, representative of the opposition Democratic Party, was placed under house arrest in December 2023. He was also forbidden from communicating with outsiders, except for the family members he lived with.
The reason was that he had failed to report to the authorities every other week, after being accused, among other things, of having helped a son-in-law gain access to land areas to build properties.
Albania is often ranked as one of Europe's most corrupt countries. According to Sali Berisha, the accusations against him are "political".
