A French military vessel has rescued 29 people from an oil tanker in the Red Sea.
The oil tanker was attacked on Wednesday. It caught fire and then drifted aimlessly since it was no longer possible to maneuver it.
The vessel has 150,000 tons of crude oil in its cargo, which could pose a threat to both traffic and the environment, writes the EU's military operation in the Red Sea, Aspides, on platform X.
The Iran-backed Houthi movement in Yemen is suspected of being behind the attack, which is described as the most serious in the Red Sea in several weeks. In addition to the Gaza War, the movement has carried out many similar attacks against primarily Israel-connected vessels that have passed through the important trade route.
According to the UKMTO, the British military's organization that monitors global sea trade, the vessel was attacked by a group of men who arrived in smaller boats. Four projectiles were also reportedly fired.
