The PKK has led a several decades-long uprising in Turkey and is considered by Turkey and its Western allies to be a terrorist organization.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government has expanded the crackdown on the opposition in recent months and arrested, among others, journalists and politicians. Several elected Kurdish mayors have been dismissed for alleged links to the PKK, and replaced with state-appointed officials.
