Guide: Everything You Need to Know Ahead of the Sports Gala
Royal starlight, expected prize rain over Armand Duplantis and a new "Svennis" tribute. Here's everything you need to know ahead of the Sports Gala.
Hanna Öberg back – racing in Oberhof
Hanna Öberg is back in the biathlon national team that competes in the World Cup in Oberhof this week. "Some active athletes have been ill during Christmas and had to adjust their training, but now all selected skiers are healthy and ready for the year's first competitions," says the national team's head coach Johannes Lukas in a press release.
"It's now about giving the body the time it needs"
Hanna Öberg was in the form of her life when she fell ill before the season started. After interrupting her competitions and going home, the national team coach hopes that the biathlon star will find her form ahead of the World Championship.
The Power Message: On the Podium with Two Debutants
A few too many misses, a bit too slow skiing – but still a podium finish. The Swedish biathlon ladies deliver even on a day when not everything goes according to plan.
Öberg's message: I've competed enough for this year
Hanna Öberg has not been recognizable during the World Championship leadership. Now she is left out of Sunday's relay team in Hochfilzen – and for SVT she confirms that she will opt out of the competitions in France next weekend.
After the successful start - Öberg shot herself out
Elvira Öberg shot herself out, Ella Halvarsson didn't have the strength all the way and for Hanna Öberg it was mostly pitch black. The Swedish female biathletes had a tough time in the sprint in Hochfilzen.
After the Successful Start: "They Should Keep an Eye on Us"
Four relays, two victories and two third places. The World Championship premiere in biathlon could not have gone better for the Swedish team.
New sensation - won after giant drama
France seemed to be heading for the day's second dominant victory in a biathlon relay. But after Julia Simon was forced to take a penalty loop in the final shooting, Elvira Öberg could bring home the victory to Sweden.
New Swedish podium spot after drama: "Panic"
Third relay race, third medal for the Swedish biathletes in the World Championship premiere in Finland. But had not national team leader Johannes Lukas sprinted so fast, Sweden would not have gotten to start in the men's relay where it became a third place.
Öberg ready for the relay – the surprise gets to sit out
Hanna Öberg is clear for the women's relay at the biathlon World Championship premiere. On the other hand, successful skier Ella Halvarsson will have to sit out.
Took the chance after tough demands – won the premiere
She came into the A-national team this year with demands to perform in order to stay. Ella Halvarsson took the chance – and won the first World Championship competition in biathlon.
Swedish criticism ahead of the premiere: "I see a risk"
The biathlete has changed the start order in the World Championship for the very best, who now start later. Critics believe that it can produce unfair results.
Sjöström's Criticism: "Would Have Been a Worthy Winner"
Sarah Sjöström's successful coach Antonio Lutula was denied a nomination at the Sports Gala. Something that this summer's double Olympic Games gold medalist is critical of.
Rookies get a chance in the World Cup premiere
The national team debutants Ella Halvarsson, Anna-Karin Heijdenberg and Anton Ivarsson have been selected for the World Cup premiere in biathlon in Finnish Kontiolahti. "We have seen a strong drive in both our established skiers and the new ones in the A-team," says national team coach Johannes Lukas.
After the Olympic Success – the Duo Can Be Awarded at the Sports Gala
David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig won Olympic Games gold in beach volleyball last summer. Now they are nominated for the prize Team of the Year at the Sports Gala.
