Despite massive criticism – anonymous witnesses are now allowed
After years of debate and two government inquiries, it is finally becoming a reality: Anonymous witnesses are being allowed in Swedish courts. The government hopes that it can break the culture of silence surrounding gangs, while heavyweight lawyers warn of zero or opposite effect.
Crime victims to receive better support: "Gaps in support"
The Government has decided on two measures to strengthen support for witnesses and victims of crime. There are significant differences in victim support depending on where in the country you are, says Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (The Moderate Party) at a press conference.
Courts do not alert when healthcare professionals are convicted
Drug-abusing doctors and ambulance nurses convicted of drunk driving can continue working without the supervisory authorities finding out. Now demands for rule changes are being raised.
Judges cannot keep up with their workload
A large proportion of Sweden's judges have such a heavy workload that they cannot perform their tasks within regular working hours, according to a new survey. Many judges see the high workload as a threat to the rule of law.
Proposal to prevent criminals from threatening witnesses
Investigation protocols in criminal cases should be kept secret longer than today. This is proposed by the government's investigator, among other things, alongside anonymous witnesses.
Overload attack against Sweden's courts
Sweden's court websites have been exposed to an overload attack. The attack means that, among other things, both the Supreme Court's overarching website and the different court and appeal court websites have had problems since 8 am this morning.
