The judicial system is given extended opportunities to check persons against the criminal records and suspicion registers, for example when hiring. The purpose is to prevent authorities from being infiltrated by criminals.

The regulatory amendment decided by the government will come into effect on June 23.

"This is a tool that the authorities themselves have requested, precisely so that they can shield themselves against organized crime and unauthorized influence", says Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M) in a written comment.

The regulatory amendment means that the Prosecution Authority, the Economic Crimes Authority, the Administrative Courts Agency and the courts will be given the opportunity to screen all individuals employed by the authorities.

The Prison and Probation Service will be given extended opportunities to screen those who gain access to remand prisons and correctional facilities and those who will be working with convicted individuals in halfway houses, homes for care of young people and during contract care.
