Last year was the tenth warmest on record, and the average temperature also exceeded 1.5 degrees above the target. Then there are things you can do to mitigate the effects, and it must happen now, says Anna-Caren Sätherberg.
The Social Democrats: Sweden must take responsibility
She mentions the ongoing wildfires in California as a consequence of global warming.
We also see it in Sweden with forest fires, with storms, with floods, with drought that makes us not get sufficient harvests. It's real, and if it looks like this now in the world, then Sweden must also take its share of the responsibility, says Sätherberg.
What needs to be done?
Sweden has looked at transportation and industry's transformation, that's what dominates the emissions in Sweden and in the large industrial countries. There, you must pursue a policy that ensures reducing emissions, says Sätherberg.
The Center Party: Irresponsible policy
The Center Party believes that the government's climate policy has contributed to the heat record.
In a written statement to TT, Rickard Nordin, climate and energy policy spokesperson for the Center Party, says that the sitting Swedish government has "dismantled functioning climate policy" in favor of promises of nuclear power.
"It's that kind of irresponsible policy in the world that makes us now exceed 1.5 degrees", writes Nordin.
He also writes that swift measures are now needed to reduce emissions and mentions environmental bonuses, biofuels, and abolished fossil fuel subsidies.
TT has sought climate and environment minister Romina Pourmokhtari for a comment.
