20 August 2023: Spain takes the World Championship gold for the first time on the women's side after a final victory over England with 1–0 in Sydney. But the aftermath is almost only about Spain's football president Luis Rubiales, who during the medal ceremony kisses player Jennifer Hermoso on the mouth.

25 August 2023: Rubiales says in a defense speech that he will not resign and that the kiss took place with consent. Hermoso claims the opposite.

26 August 2023: The International Football Federation (Fifa) suspends Rubiales for three months during the investigation.

1 September 2023: The domestic league, Liga F, goes on strike to get more fair conditions and to reduce the wage gap to the men's players in La Liga. The first round is then cancelled before an agreement is reached.

6 September 2023: Hermoso reports Rubiales for sexual assault.

10 September 2023: Rubiales announces in an interview with program leader Piers Morgan that he is resigning as president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

15 September 2023: 39 players, including 21 of 23 players from the World Championship gold team, announce that they intend to boycott the match against Sweden on September 22. "We are convinced that comprehensive changes are needed within RFEF's leadership and specifically within the area of women's football," the players write in a joint statement.

18 September 2023: Several players who have announced that they intend to boycott the national team are selected for the Spanish squad.

20 September 2023: RFEF and the players reach an agreement regarding equality, equal pay, and improvements in women's football development.

30 October 2023: Fifa announces that Rubiales is banned for three years from all football.

26 January 2024: Rubiales' appeal against the Fifa ban is rejected.

27 March 2024: The prosecutor demands that Luis Rubiales be sentenced to two and a half years in prison for sexual assault and unlawful coercion.

3 February 2025: The first of 13 trial days in San Fernando de Henares outside Madrid.

20 February 2025: The verdict against Rubiales is guilty. He is fined 10,800 euros, equivalent to 120,000 kronor, for sexual assault but avoids prison and is acquitted of charges of unlawful coercion. Via his lawyer, Rubiales announces to AFP that he will appeal the verdict.
