The industrial index Dow Jones ended the day with a plus of 0.5 percent, while S&P 500 fell by 0.5 percent. Nasdaq's composite index had a tough trading day and fell by 1.3 percent.

Paypal, which provides payment solutions, rose by 8.6 percent. The restaurant chain Chipotle also did well, increasing by 3.1 percent.

It went worse for the cybersecurity company Crowdstrike, which continues to fall since the global IT problems earlier in July. A fault in a software update from the company put a large number of computers out of action, resulting in extensive problems for everything from the airline industry to banks and stores. The company's share fell by 9.7 percent on Tuesday.

Several major technology companies will report their quarterly reports this week. On Wednesday, interest rate decisions from the US Federal Reserve will also be announced.
