Victims of violence are two to three times more likely to also develop mental health problems such as personality disorders and addiction. They also run a significantly increased risk of suicide attempts and premature death. This is shown by new research from Sweden, Finland, and the United Kingdom.
"We could also note that the risk persists for several years after the initial violent experience," says Jonas Forsman, senior physician and specialist in psychiatry at the National Board of Forensic Medicine and researcher at the Karolinska Institute, in a press release.
The study is based on data on 127,628 people in Sweden and Finland who received specialized care after being exposed to violence.
