The problem-ridden pier that the American military built off the coast of Gaza to facilitate the delivery of supplies is now being shut down. This was announced by Vice Admiral Brad Cooper.
US President Joe Biden has expressed dissatisfaction with the pier, which has several times been driven out to sea and had to be repaired.
It has also been difficult to distribute the supplies to those in need in Gaza once they have been brought ashore via the pier. The UN's food program paused its deliveries in June to review the security situation after Israel carried out a military operation in the area.
The pier project was presented by Biden in March after Israel blocked deliveries of emergency aid via land. The Pentagon has stated that the pier has contributed to pressuring Israel to open more routes for the import of emergency aid.
